In the never-ending quest to make gadgets thinner than a credit card and twice as fragile, Lexar has decided that a standard USB-C port is just too bulky. Following in the footsteps of trendsetters like Xteink, Lexar's new Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD ditches the conventional connector in favor of a proprietary magnetic SnapLink cable, because nothing says 'portable storage' like an easily losable proprietary cable.

When the Muse launches later this year in 512GB and 1TB capacities, it will measure just 3.8mm at its thickest point - tapering to a razor-thin 1mm at the edges - thanks to high-density NAND stacking and a 'custom ultra-thin PCB architecture.' Because if there's one thing we've learned, it's that the best way to improve performance is to make the device so thin that you're afraid to sneeze near it.

But fear not, the performance is still there: read speeds up to 1,050MB/s and write speeds up to 1,000MB/s, which is plenty fast for recording 4K Apple ProRes video at up to 120fps on a compatible iPhone. Just don't expect to use it without the SnapLink cable, which magnetically attaches to a pogo-pin connector on the side of the drive. The company doesn't specify the magnet strength, but we're sure it's totally fine until you accidentally knock it off during a file transfer, which is definitely a scenario they've considered.

And if you're using the Muse to record videos through your phone, you'll need to slip it into the included magnetic sleeve to mount it on the back of your device - adding a delightful amount of thickness, completely undermining the whole point of an ultra-slim SSD. Because nothing says 'convenience' like having to accessorize your storage device.
