Jony Ive's First OpenAI Gadget Is a Hockey Puck That Talks Back, Because Why Not
OpenAI and Jony Ive are building a hockey puck-sized speaker that moves, sees, and chats, priced at $300+, launching in 2027. It's basically a smart speaker with a trust fund.
In a stunning display of form over function, OpenAI and former Apple design guru Jony Ive are reportedly cooking up a gadget that is, and we quote, "essentially a smart speaker without a display." According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, this battery-powered, doughnut-shaped marvel is roughly the size of a hockey puck, because nothing says "futuristic AI personal assistant" like a frozen disc of rubber.
The device, expected to hit shelves in 2027 for a wallet-bruising price north of $300, will allegedly feature "a unique look, complete with moving parts," some of which will move autonomously to hint at whether it's responding or just judging you. It'll also come with lights, a camera system, and other sensors - because a puck that can see you is exactly what we need.
Gurman's sources claim the device is designed to be "easy to carry around the home with one hand," which sounds a lot like Amazon's ill-fated Tap speaker, but with more existential dread. It'll work similarly to ChatGPT's voice mode on smartphones, but with "more advanced models for humanlike interactivity." So basically, it's a hockey puck that will chat with you like a human, but likely with the same condescending tone we've come to expect.
Despite the device's Apple-like pedigree, Gurman insists it will "look and feel nothing like an Apple product" - which is either a bold design choice or a legal necessity, given the ongoing lawsuit. This puck could be the first in a "family of devices" OpenAI has planned, but we'll probably hear a lot more about them before they actually materialize, because that's how tech leaks work.
