Iran-Linked Hackers Shut Down UK Power Plant, Because Who Needs Electricity Anyway?
Iran-linked hackers reportedly shut down a UK power plant for four days, and the government is now advising power companies to maybe, perhaps, consider cybersecurity.
In a move that will surprise absolutely no one who follows cybersecurity news, a small power plant in the UK was reportedly taken offline by hackers with ties to the Iranian regime. The attack, which occurred last month, caused the facility to shut down for four days, according to The Telegraph. The UK government, in a classic display of reassurance, insisted that at no point was the nation's energy system at risk - which is comforting, presumably, unless you were the one flipping the lights off at that particular plant.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has since contacted power companies to warn them about the risk of cyber attacks, because apparently the threat of hackers turning off your electricity is a real concern. The affected site was a small-scale generator, not a major power station, and the government, along with the National Cyber Security Centre, has remained tight-lipped about the specifics - citing security reasons, naturally.
Iran has long been known as a capable cyber power, and Western cybersecurity experts have been bracing for state-linked attacks following the country's conflict with the US this year. So far, however, there's been surprisingly little action - unless you count this little power plant incident, which, while inconvenient, wasn't exactly the cyber Armageddon some predicted.
Meanwhile, the UK government is working on updating its cybersecurity regulations and developing a new energy resilience strategy for later this year. Because if there's one thing we've learned, it's that a good strategy always prevents hackers from doing exactly what they were going to do anyway.
