Launched in 2024, Gems were Google's attempt to let users teach their AI to perform tasks without repeating instructions. Pre-made Gems included a learning coach, brainstorming assistant, career guide, coding partner, and editor. Users could also create their own, like a nutritionist or a running coach, and share them with others - a feature Google hoped would boost Gemini's popularity. But alas, the tech giant has decided that what the world really needs is another rebrand.

As all-in-one AI agents like Meta's Muse and Instinct gain traction, Google is pivoting. The company says the migration will be seamless: users won't have to lift a finger, and Gems will remain usable until the switch. But here's the catch: once they become skills, they won't be as consumer-friendly. Instead of simply typing a request, users will have to enter a forward slash "/" in a task thread to select the skill they want - a UI that screams "engineers designed this."
