Sheffield is rolling out free sports sessions across more than a dozen parks and green spaces this summer, because nothing says "school holidays" like the gentle reminder that kids need to move. The two-hour sessions, running from 20 July to 28 August, will take place at locations including Firth Park, Greenhill Park and Gleadless Common, offering football, rounders and other multi-sport activities with family-friendly games for all ages and abilities. Everyone Active, the contractor running the city's leisure facilities like the English Institute of Sport and Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, will lead the events, and they're even throwing in free food and drink. Lorenzo Clark from Everyone Active noted the scheme provides activities for those who "might not necessarily be able to go away on holiday because of affordability," which is a polite way of saying not everyone can afford a trip to the beach. Councillor Brian Holmshaw, chair of the communities, parks and leisure policy committee, acknowledged the perennial parental challenge: "how to entertain their kids during the daytime." The sessions, he hopes, will get families active and having fun "hopefully in the sun" - because British weather is about as reliable as a teenager's promise to clean their room.
