Residents in east London got an unexpected outdoor evening when a fire at a railway embankment forced them out of their homes. Twenty fire engines and about 125 firefighters descended on the scene near Vallentin Road in Walthamstow, proving that even railways can have a bad day. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that the blaze affected one house, multiple gardens and sheds, and the embankment itself. Miraculously, no injuries were reported. The culprit? An electrical fire sparked by a fallen tree, because apparently trees and electricity don't mix. The fire produced a "significant amount of smoke," prompting officials to advise locals to seal their windows and doors, while motorists were urged to avoid the area, including Wood Street. The Weaver Overground line suffered a partial closure, because even trains need a break sometimes. A 32-metre turntable ladder was deployed as a water tower, and the brigade's drone team also made an appearance - because why not add some high-tech flair to the chaos? LFB Assistant Commissioner Tom Goodall noted that firefighters worked in "hot and arduous conditions" to bring the fire under control. One house was alight, another suffered damage to a rear extension, and the gardens of about 30 properties were affected. Goodall praised crews for preventing further spread. The LFB received over 100 calls starting at 6.27pm, mobilizing crews from Tottenham, Bethnal Green, Walthamstow, Chingford, and surrounding stations. Local MP Stella Creasy took to Instagram, asking people to avoid the area and to support evacuated families with refreshments at St Mary's Welcome Centre. Later, she announced that most evacuated residents could return home. A rest centre was also set up at Walthamstow Central library in partnership with Waltham Forest council. Because nothing says "community spirit" like a library serving as a refuge from a railway inferno.
