In a move that has dogs everywhere re-evaluating their meal plans, the fresh dog food brand Years has recalled all of its meals after reports that a recipe change may have caused some pups to develop a condition that can lead to blindness if left untreated. Because nothing says 'treat your best friend' like a side of potential sight loss.

The company, which delivers 'personalised' meals via subscription and also sells through retailers like Pets at Home, has told owners to stop feeding the meals 'immediately' and to refrain from donating or selling them. So no, you can't pawn off the suspicious kibble on your neighbor's dog.

As of early Wednesday, Years had received 192 reports of 'potential, yet unverified, eye issues' out of roughly 40,000 customers, up from 57 suspected cases on Sunday. The condition in question is sudden bilateral dry eye, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), which sounds fancy but just means the dog's eyes are so dry they're sore, and if left untreated, can lead to visual problems and blindness. The Royal Kennel Club notes affected dogs may rub their eyes, squint, or have a thick, mucusy discharge, which sounds absolutely delightful.

The suspected culprit? Buckwheat, an ingredient added to the meals several months ago. A now-deleted blog post from February assured readers that buckwheat is safe for dogs 'provided it's cooked properly and fed in sensible portions,' adding that Years carefully calculates the right amount to ensure 'all the benefits without any risks.' Because what could go wrong with a carefully calculated risk?

Years says the recall is precautionary, as causation hasn't been proven, and they're investigating potential contamination in the buckwheat supply. Meanwhile, a Facebook group called 'Years Dry Eye Cases and info' has over 2,100 members, with new cases being posted hourly, and another group is exploring 'legal avenues.' One concerned owner, a 23-year-old Londoner with a three-year-old shiba inu, told the Guardian they've been a customer for two years and are 'genuinely worried about whether eye problems are coming.'

So, if your dog has been dining on Years fresh meals, you might want to check their eyes for any suspicious dryness. And maybe keep an eye on the news for the next recall - because apparently, even dog food can't escape the drama.
