ChatGPT Now Answers Questions With Charts, Buttons, and a Seven-Speed Bicycle Diagram You Didn't Ask For
OpenAI's new Intelligent UI turns ChatGPT into an overachieving infographic machine, complete with bicycle diagrams and Mahjong tiles, because reading is apparently passé.
OpenAI has unveiled a new "Intelligent UI" feature for ChatGPT, because apparently walls of text were simply too dignified a way to receive information. The update, rolling out to all users alongside GPT-6, lets the chatbot combine its text responses with diagrams, charts, forms, tappable buttons, and other interactive visuals - transforming your simple question into what is essentially a PowerPoint presentation you never requested.
In a blog post explaining the change, OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 to decide when to generate interactive visuals instead of plain text, and how to format them properly within its response. One example shared by OpenAI shows ChatGPT producing a diagram of a seven-speed bicycle if you ask about its design, complete with interactive buttons that highlight different parts. Another demonstrates ChatGPT teaching you to play Mahjong by generating visuals of each tile and sorting them into scrollable categories. You can also ask ChatGPT to generate tools for specific tasks - a retirement savings calculator, a retro game, or a bill splitter - which it will then produce in-line with its response, presumably so you can feel productive while ignoring the actual work you were supposed to be doing.
OpenAI announced its first GPT-6 models last month, and is now bringing the Sol and Luna versions to ChatGPT. Beyond enabling Intelligent UI, the company says GPT-6 allows ChatGPT to perform better web searches and deliver quicker, partial answers while it gathers more information. OpenAI also notes that GPT-6 "showed stronger resistance to attempts to bypass its safety training" - a reassuring sentence that definitely doesn't imply anyone was trying.
GPT-6 with Intelligent UI is rolling out globally to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users starting today, before expanding to Go and free tiers on Thursday. Higher-tier subscribers get access to the mid-range GPT-6 Sol model, while Go and free users will make do with the more efficient GPT-6 Luna - because nothing says "premium experience" like being handed the budget model with a smile.
