In what can only be described as either a coordinated strike or an extremely unfortunate coincidence, the three biggest names in AI decided to have a group outage on the same day. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, xAI’s Grok, and Anthropic’s Claude all started throwing errors around 11AM ET, leaving users staring at loading screens and wondering if they'd been ghosted by their favorite chatbots.

ChatGPT users were greeted with error messages, and OpenAI's status page confirmed "elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex." The outage wasn't just about conversations - logins, file uploads, voice mode, search, deep research, and image generation all decided to take a break. OpenAI says it has "applied a mitigation" and is "monitoring recovery," though its AI tools are still experiencing "degraded performance." The timing is particularly awkward, as OpenAI was just teasing the launch of Astra, its new AI model. Nothing says "we're ready for the future" like your current models crumbling.

Anthropic's Claude chatbot, Claude Code, and the Claude API also started experiencing issues around the same time. Initially, the status page indicated that Mythos/Fable 5.1, Mythos/Fable 5, Opus 5, Opus 4.8, and Opus 4.6 were impacted starting around 10:30AM ET, but now it's only affecting Opus 4.8 and Opus 5. Anthropic technical staff member CJ Avilla took to X to explain that an "infrastructure issue" caused a partial outage, adding, "We’re working on it but don’t have an ETA yet." So, no ETA, but at least they're working on it - small comforts.

Meanwhile, Grok on Android, iOS, and the web is also down. Trying to prompt the chatbot on X returns a message saying, "This model is overloaded right now. Please try again shortly or pick a different model." The Grok website says xAI is "working on restoring service as quickly as possible." Rest assured, they're on it.

It's unclear what went wrong or if these outages are somehow related. The Verge has reached out to OpenAI, xAI, and Anthropic for comments but hasn't heard back yet. In the meantime, if you're feeling lonely, you can always talk to a human - assuming they're not also down.
