When Alessio Mamo started taking photos 18 years ago, he was more interested in aesthetics. Then a 2013 shipwreck off Lampedusa that killed over 250 Eritrean migrants taught him the camera's power to document social injustice. Now he's turning his lens on children like Manal, a 12-year-old who suffered severe burns to her arms and face from a missile explosion in Iraq. Yet, as Mamo notes, 'in many ways she seemed just like a regular young girl.' Because nothing says 'regular' like recovering from war wounds in a hospital. Mamo's project, The Hospital of All the Wars, focuses on patients at the Médecins Sans Frontières Al-Mowasah hospital in Amman, Jordan - a place where childhood and conflict collide in the most un-regular ways.
