A three-year-old California girl learned an unforgettable - and frankly, terrifying - lesson about the dangers of online shopping earlier this month when she was bitten by a rattlesnake hiding under an Amazon package. The incident occurred on July 13 in Santa Clarita, north of Los Angeles, as Addy ran out with her mother to retrieve a package dropped over their gate. "Tragically, a southern pacific rattlesnake was hiding under the brown padded envelope and bit Addy's left hand," her father, Manny Barajas, wrote in a fundraising note. Addy's mother, Lynn, rushed her to meet first responders at a nearby grocery store parking lot, who administered anti-venom. The hospital then transferred Addy to a facility with a pediatric ICU, where she received two more doses. "She's doing great now," Barajas told KTLA, adding that she's still bruised but has high spirits - though she keeps asking why she was bitten by a snake. (Because, Dad, why?) Rattlesnake bites have become more common in California this year, with heatwaves since March increasing snake activity. Three people have died so far - about two more than usual - and the California poison control system has received reports of 277 bites, nearly as many as normally received in an entire year.
