The pet tech industry is expanding rapidly, and pet owners are apparently just as eager to strap wearable tech onto their animals as they are to strap it onto themselves. Smart rings, smartwatches, and fitness trackers for humans have paved the way for a world in which your cat, too, can be quantified.

Wired's reviewer has spent the better part of the year testing smart collars, previously running the Fi Mini and the Tractive Smart Cat Tracker on a cat named Basil, monitoring his location, movement, and sleep. Now comes the Tractive Cat 6 Mini, released this spring, tested on Basil for a month and compared against other models - this one built specifically for cats, with improved health features including heart rate and respiratory rate.

The new model delivered surprisingly accurate health and activity stats, helping the reviewer understand Basil's routine and baseline more than previous models. Those new health features would be especially helpful, the reviewer notes, for people with aging cats or cats in poor health. For outdoor cats that roam, though, the Fi Mini gets the nod - it's more compact with a longer battery life.

The Cat 6 Mini's new AI-powered weekly reports, which compare your cat to similar cats to gauge whether it's healthy, were a valued feature. The collar itself, however, died quickly, was a pain to charge, and its GPS location accuracy could be hit-or-miss. Whether this smart cat collar is right for you depends largely on your needs and your cat's.
