In a development that will surprise absolutely no one who has watched a DJ awkwardly fiddle with a laptop at a wedding, Serato has brought its pro-level DJ suite to the iPhone and iPad with Serato DJ for iOS. Previously, the company's mobile efforts were limited to apps like Pyro, which essentially added autofades between songs in a playlist - a feature that felt less like DJing and more like a very expensive crossfade button. This marks the first time most of the features from its flagship DJ app have been available on a mobile device, putting it in the same league as competitors Rekordbox and Algoriddim, which have had proper mobile DJ apps for some time. Better late than never, we suppose.

For DJs accustomed to Serato on a laptop, the workflow should feel instantly familiar. You can even transfer your library directly from Serato DJ 5.0 on your laptop to your iOS device either over USB-C or wirelessly - because nothing says "professional DJ" like syncing your entire music collection mid-set. The mobile version supports stem separation and the company's full suite of effects, along with EQ tools, BPM matching, key sync, cue points, recording, and more for live performance and capturing those performances for posterity (or for proving to your friends that you did, in fact, play that one song).

You can DJ directly from your touchscreen in various layouts, but Serato DJ for iOS also supports over 120 hardware controllers. With some older controllers, you might need an adapter - a small price to pay for the illusion of tactile control. It even supports Digital Vinyl Systems (DVS) for scratching and DJs who prefer the feel of real records, because nothing says "modern convenience" like hauling a crate of vinyl to a gig and then plugging it into your phone.

Serato DJ for iOS is available as a feature-limited download from the App Store. You can buy a license for $149 or get it bundled along with Serato DJ Pro, Serato Studio, and all of its expansions for $14.99 a month. So whether you're a serious professional or just someone who wants to look busy at a party, Serato now has you covered - on the device that was already in your pocket.
