Sam Altman Renames Himself 'Ram Altman,' Insists He Wants You to Have All the Memory You Can Cram In There
OpenAI's CEO rebranded himself 'Ram Altman' on X to clarify that he does, in fact, want you to have lots of memory - while the AI-driven RAM shortage he's linked to may last until 2030.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spent election night not doomscrolling results but defending his position on PC RAM purchases, a sentence that would have been incomprehensible to most humans a decade ago. In response to another user's comment on X, Altman changed his display name to "Ram Altman" and clarified his stance: "i actually do want the world to have tons of memory and people to put as much as they want in their computers, and it is fucking annoying that this was taken out of context. i have been arguing for the world to ramp up memory production for a long time." Nothing says election night like a nomenclature-based rebuttal.
He wasn't done. Replying to another comment, Altman wrote, "i want you to have so much ram lets build more." The grammar may be optional, but the sentiment is unambiguous: more RAM, for everyone, ideally yesterday.
The kerfuffle traces back to an interview on the Cheeky Pint podcast, where Altman had said, "it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time." That remark landed as a suggestion that regular people shouldn't be hoarding memory modules - a take that, given the current market, is either wildly out of touch or accidentally on the side of consumers, depending on your mood.
The context Altman says was lost: AI data centers have been snapping up the world's RAM supply, driving shortages that are leading to tech price hikes and making it genuinely tough for many people to "have so much ram" like Altman says he wants. So when he says he wants you to have more memory, he's speaking aspirationally - the market has other plans.
And those plans may not improve soon. Intel expects the RAM shortage to last through at least next year, while SK Hynix predicted it could drag on until 2030. So Altman can rename himself Ram Altman, but the DRAM shortage remains stubbornly unimpressed by wordplay. In the meantime, perhaps we can all agree that five percent utilization is indeed terrible - and that the world's limited supply of DRAM is currently being used by something other than your gaming rig.
