Russia has struck a second major bridge in Kyiv, according to Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko, as Moscow continues its charming campaign of dismantling Ukraine's capital piece by piece.
The Saturday morning attack on the Pivnichnyi (Northern) Bridge injured two people and damaged the road surface and overhead trolleybus wires, Klitschko said, because nothing says strategic military target like a trolleybus wire. Traffic jams ensued, as they tend to do when bridges get bombed.
This follows multiple drone strikes this week on the Pivdennyi (Southern) Bridge, prompting Klitschko to declare that "the enemy is tearing Kyiv apart." Which, to be fair, is one way to describe a city-wide infrastructure demolition project.
Russia claims its drones hit the two bridges because they're used to transfer Ukrainian troops and military cargo. Moscow also renewed its suggestion that foreign citizens, including diplomats, should leave Kyiv, presumably so they can enjoy the show from a safer distance.
The two bridges across the Dnipro River connect the western and eastern halves of the capital and had somehow avoided being hit until Thursday, marking a not-so-fun new chapter in Moscow's strategy. Earlier attacks on the Pivdennyi Bridge had already caused major travel disruption, with metro and car travel suspended.
Many of the city's roughly three million residents rely on the metro to get around every day, which makes the whole "destroy the bridges" plan particularly inconvenient for them.
Writing on Telegram on Saturday morning, Klitschko said "emergency services are on their way" after the Pivnichnyi Bridge was hit. "Traffic on the bridge from the left to the right bank is currently blocked," he added, in case anyone was planning a scenic drive.
Earlier attacks on the Pivdennyi Bridge prompted Kyiv's defence council to hold a crisis meeting on Friday. Klitschko warned afterwards that the city was now in a "very dramatic situation" as Moscow was battering its "critical infrastructure, logistics, housing" and other key facilities.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Russia is acting in response to Ukraine's strikes on Russian energy facilities, despite the fact that Moscow launched such attacks first. It's a classic "you started it" defense, except the other guy actually started it.
After the Pivdennyi Bridge was attacked, passengers described how dust from a blast wave entered their carriage through the ventilation system, which is one way to make a commute memorable.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Putin had decided there were "no rules now" when attacking Ukraine. In an interview with the Financial Times, he said: "The Russians have failed to occupy us. So now they are carrying out massive attacks and mass killings." He added: "They want to destroy our bridges... our data centres, the internet, mobile networks, hospitals, kindergartens, schools, universities - everything. They want people to flee their cities."
Putin on Thursday insisted that Russia's attacks on Ukrainian economic targets were a direct response to Ukraine's strikes on Russia's oil refineries and its ships in the Black Sea. "Now from every direction we're receiving calls 'let's stop'. But they started it," Putin said after a wide-ranging speech at the Valdai foreign policy forum.
The Kremlin leader admitted Kyiv had "got some results" from its refinery attacks and Russia had lost about 1% of its GDP. Ukraine maintains it began attacking Russian oil infrastructure because it helps the Kremlin finance the war.
Russia has targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure, ramping up attacks every winter since Putin launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022. Because nothing says "winter wonderland" like a targeted strike on the power grid.
