Buying a laptop is hard. There are hundreds of options, and even after narrowing it down to one model, you're faced with a dizzying array of configurations. Take the HP OmniBook 3, for instance: my review unit had a Snapdragon X chipset, but HP also sells versions with an Intel N10 processor and 4GB of RAM, the same processor with 8GB, another with an Intel N250 chip, and yet another with an Intel Core 3 N355. And that's just one laptop.
Most people don't need the most powerful model, but certain upgrades are absolutely worth paying extra for. After reviewing countless laptops, here are the features worth your money - and the ones you should skip.
RAM is the easiest upgrade to justify, since it affects nearly everything. Modern software is hungrier than ever, especially if you're running multiple browser tabs alongside Spotify, Slack, Zoom, and Photoshop. I've argued that 16GB should be the practical baseline for laptops. If you're a content creator, gamer, programmer, or just someone who regularly has heavy workloads, upgrading to 32GB is a better investment - it provides extra breathing room and may extend your computer's lifespan.
A good display is another no-brainer. A bright, color-accurate panel significantly improves your experience - text looks sharper, streaming content appears more vibrant, and photo/video editing becomes more reliable. For most users, I recommend spending a little extra on a 1440p or 2K resolution panel. If you want to go further, a 3K or higher display feels premium.
Battery life is a game-changer. A machine that lasts nearly 20 hours on a single charge is drastically different from one that lasts only eight or 12. To ensure great battery life, opt for a laptop with an energy-efficient processor. In my experience, Qualcomm's Snapdragon X provides the best battery life for Windows laptops - I had the OmniBook 3 for nearly 28 hours on a single charge. Chipsets from Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm are so new that machines carrying them are usually more expensive, but if endurance matters, they're worth it.
A dedicated graphics card is worth it for gamers, video editors, and 3D artists - it dramatically reduces render times and provides muscle for demanding projects. For everyone else, it's unnecessary. Integrated GPUs have improved significantly and can now handle light photo editing and casual gaming.
Cooling matters more than you think. Gaming laptops with powerful GPUs like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 generate a lot of heat, and heat kills performance. Advanced cooling systems - vapor chambers, heat sinks, larger fans - are also important in professional workstations and high-end productivity laptops. Samsung's Galaxy Book6 Ultra, for example, uses a revamped cooling system with an outlet fan and heatsink, plus a large inlet grill for more airflow.
Now for the features you can ignore. Touchscreens sound useful but are gimmicky on clamshell laptops - you'll just get smudges and pay extra. If you need touch input, get a convertible or a tablet.
Be mindful of hardware upgrades: 16GB RAM is smart, 32GB is worthwhile for power users, but 64GB is overkill for almost everyone. The same goes for processors: a flagship chip like the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX is overkill for the average person; midrange chips like the Intel Core 5 120U are remarkably capable.
Finally, watch out for gimmicks: dual screens, E-ink lids, hidden webcams, LED effects, capacitive touch panels - some are useful (like the Asus Zenbook Duo's dual screens or Dell's XPS 13 capacitive touch panel), but ask yourself whether you'll actually use them regularly. You'll be paying for them either way.
My advice after years of testing laptops? The best laptops aren't the ones with the most powerful hardware or the most features - they're the ones that deliver the best balance of performance, efficiency, display, and value.
