This move is designed to make video creation more accessible for those who haven't mastered the fine art of professional editing software - or who simply don't want to.

Creators can start with this auto-assembled draft and refine it from there, sparing themselves the agony of dragging every clip frame by frame. First Draft is initially available on iPhone, accessible directly from Instagram's camera while recording or from the Reels gallery after selecting multiple clips. Because who needs to switch apps when you can have your editing done for you in the same one you're already doom-scrolling in?

The feature isn't exactly groundbreaking - similar auto-editing tools exist in Adobe Firefly's Quick Cuts and CapCut's Auto Cut. But Instagram's integration means creators have one less reason to export footage to an external editor, which is a win for laziness and a loss for third-party apps. This is part of a broader push by Instagram to keep creators within its ecosystem.
