Google appears to be expanding its "Call for Me" AI feature beyond the sterile realm of business calls, potentially letting you deploy Gemini to deliver messages to friends and family. Android Authority reports discovering a "Gemini Calling" introductory screen in an APK teardown, complete with examples like "Call Mom and tell her I will be 15 minutes late" and "Call John and ask if he is coming for dinner." Because nothing says familial love like outsourcing your apology to a large language model.

Based on those examples, even with this expansion, Gemini would likely be limited to basic, text-message-like calls. So while Google's AI might not automate an entire catch-up phone call with your relatives - complete with awkward silences and passive-aggressive inquiries about your career - it could deliver quick messages to people who prefer a phone call, miss texts often, or, in a plot twist, still have a landline phone. Yes, those people exist. They're called your grandparents.

Android Authority also says it found "granular permissions" for Gemini actions in individual apps, including what appear to be settings for phone call permissions. These settings would allow users to pick and choose which app capabilities they want to allow Gemini to access, potentially giving users an option to opt out of receiving incoming automated calls from Gemini. Because the only thing worse than your mom calling you is your mom's AI assistant calling you. However, as Android Authority notes, it's also possible Google might not publicly release this expansion or the granular Gemini app settings. So for now, you'll just have to tell Mom you're running late yourself. The horror.
