In a move that proves even the most innocent-sounding products can harbor a dark side, a line of battery-powered socks sold at Costco has been recalled after more than a dozen wearers reported first- or second-degree burns. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday that roughly 207,800 pairs of 32 Degrees-branded socks are affected, tied to at least 14 “heat-related incidents,” 13 of which involved actual burns.
The socks, which come with a rechargeable battery pack, apparently become especially hazardous during high-intensity activities that combine heat, friction, moisture, and pressure - a perfect storm for turning your cozy foot warmers into tiny, fabric-bound space heaters.
Manufactured in China and retailing for between $30 and $46, the recalled socks were sold in medium, large, and extra large sizes at Costco online and in stores from August 2025 to March 2026. Anyone who owns a pair is advised to stop using them immediately and return them to Costco for a refund. Because nothing says “winter comfort” like second-degree burns and a trip to the return counter.
