Lamine Yamal, who is apparently not content with merely being a teenager, scored twice as Barcelona thrashed Valencia 5-0 on Sunday, keeping their pristine 100% record in La Liga intact. The reigning champions, now three points clear at the top, watched with amusement as José Mourinho's Real Madrid slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Real Betis on Friday. Fermín López, Raphinha, and Pedri also got in on the act for Hansi Flick's men, who swaggered through a hot afternoon on Spain's east coast.
Barcelona, the only team in the top flight with four wins from four, controlled proceedings from the off, much to the chagrin of Valencia's fans at a distinctly bad-tempered Mestalla. Flick, ever the perfectionist, said: "We played a fantastic game, it was nearly perfect, we controlled, we were dominant and this is what I want from the team. We stay calm and then if it's possible to score we try to do it - it was a fantastic game for us. Nothing is perfect, you always can improve. If it's perfect then you can stop working."
Yamal opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a cheeky lofted finish after Fermín dinked a delicious ball over the top. Fermín then doubled the lead in the 22nd minute after former Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon teed him up. Barcelona suffered a brief scare when Eric García limped off midway through the first half following a collision with teammate Rodri's shoulder - Rodri's first start since arriving from Manchester City this summer.
Raphinha, again deployed as the centre-forward, tapped in his sixth goal of the season from close range after Fermín turned provider. Valencia keeper Stole Dimitrievski denied Rodri, but Pedri made it 4-0 after a neat exchange with Dani Olmo. Gabriel Jesus came on for his Barça debut in the final ten minutes and nearly scored, while Yamal, staying onside to collect another Olmo pass, rounded off the scoring.
In Serie A, AC Milan were cruelly denied by a 92nd-minute equaliser from Juventus in a 1-1 draw in Turin. Teenage sensation Alphadjo Cisse had given Milan the lead with a superb finish on 69 minutes, controlling Samuel Chukwueze's crossfield pass with a deft touch before firing low into the far corner - his second goal in as many games. But Teun Koopmeiners crossed from the left and Federico Gatti rose highest to head home and snatch a point. Both sides remain on seven points from three games, with Milan fourth ahead of Juve on goals scored.
Elsewhere in Italy, Giorgi Kvernadze scored seven minutes from time to give Frosinone a dramatic 3-2 win over Venezia, who had fought back from two goals down only to leave empty-handed. Bologna twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Sassuolo, a match that ended with Bologna coach Domenico Tedesco shown a red card. Artem Dovbyk equalised in stoppage time for his first goal for the hosts.
English teenager Jay Robinson gave Monza a 1-0 lead at Parma, but 18-year-old Simone Lontani equalised on the hour mark, with the game ending 1-1. Both players scored their first Serie A goals, and both clubs earned their first point of the campaign. Robinson is on loan at Monza from Southampton.
In the Netherlands, Ronald Koeman Jr - yes, son of that Ronald Koeman - scored two penalties for Telstar, including one in the 11th minute of added time, to rescue a 2-2 draw against Cambuur. The goalkeeper, 31, converted his first spot-kick on 63 minutes before his ice-cool equaliser. He'd previously scored from the penalty spot at the end of last season to save his side from relegation.
In Germany, Mainz thumped hapless Hamburg 5-0 to ignite their Bundesliga season, while Augsburg climbed to the top of the table with a 4-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt. Sheraldo Becker opened the scoring for Mainz in the 19th minute, then turned provider for Phillipp Mwene's second. Becker set up Phillip Tietz for the third, and Tietz added a fourth before Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer punished his former club with a fifth.
Augsburg came from behind after Jonathan Burkardt headed Frankfurt in front inside six minutes. Arijon Ibrahimovic - no relation to Zlatan, presumably - headed in on debut within a minute of the restart, and Robin Fellhauer turned the game around moments later. Alexis Claude-Maurice and Fabian Rieder added further goals. Augsburg lead the Bundesliga on goal difference ahead of Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund, and Elversberg, all with two wins from two.
