An 18-month-old Arizona toddler who was pulled from a pool and declared dead at a hospital has made an unexpected recovery after being found alive in the hospital's cold room, according to a newly released police report. The incident occurred on 8 February in the Phoenix-area suburb of Gilbert, where the family had gathered to watch the NFL Super Bowl. First responders performed life-saving measures before the child was transported to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and pronounced dead by Dr. Aryan Toosi at 18:20 MST. Despite police officers telling the doctor they had seen signs of life, Toosi reportedly responded, "please do your thing and let me do my thing," adding, "I went to medical school for a reason." Five hours later, a transporter from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office arrived and discovered the child was still breathing. The toddler was flown to another hospital, where he recovered and has since been released. Police are recommending negligence charges against the parents, citing a strong smell of marijuana at the home and suggesting the child may have had unsupervised access to the pool. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office has not yet decided whether to press charges. Mercy Gilbert Medical Center said it conducted "a thorough review of all aspects of the care provided" and called it "a heartbreaking situation." The doctor's attorney declined to comment, citing patient confidentiality.
