Anthropic's Cloud Strategy Is Basically Asking Its Biggest Rivals for a Favor, Forever
Anthropic wants to spend $750 billion on cloud capacity from AWS, Google, and Microsoft - three companies that increasingly see it as a rival, not a client. Awkward.
In a development that will surprise absolutely no one who has watched the AI industry's incestuous supply chain, Anthropic is reportedly struggling to secure enough cloud capacity from AWS, Google, and Microsoft - companies that increasingly view the Claude-maker as a competitor rather than a customer, according to an S-1 filing leaked to The Wall Street Journal. It's the corporate equivalent of asking your three biggest rivals to spot you lunch money, then being shocked when they start nickel-and-diming the appetizers.
The leaked filing adds detail to figures Reuters and the Financial Times reported in late September, including Anthropic's belief that it could spend more than $750 billion on cloud contracts - some of which are still in negotiation. That's billion with a B, and a number so large it requires its own cloud infrastructure just to store the commas.
And still, apparently, that is not enough. Anthropic is leasing its own data centers and working with third-party data center operators, but the firm frets that those operators have a "limited operating history" - corporate-speak for "we're not entirely sure these folks won't accidentally unplug the servers." The hyperscalers, for all their competitive menace, at least have a track record.
The spending spree comes on the back of an $80.7 billion net loss in the first half of the year. Anthropic reported $16.3 billion in revenue during that same period, with only two customers accounting for about a fifth of sales, per the WSJ report. Concentration risk, thy name is Anthropic.
Building on previously reported catastrophic risk disclosures, the filing also warns that Anthropic could be held liable for damages caused by harmful AI behavior to a tune that would exceed available insurance coverage - a sentence that should probably come with a complimentary stress ball.
On the bright side, the company told prospective investors last week that third-quarter revenue alone has now reached $16.8 billion, up 45% from the previous quarter. Anthropic is reportedly targeting a November IPO, because nothing says "investor confidence" like a leaked S-1 revealing you're hemorrhaging cash while begging your competitors for server space.
Anthropic did not immediately respond to TechCrunch's request for comment - presumably because it was busy negotiating with AWS, Google, and Microsoft over who gets to sit at the grown-ups' table.
