Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore have announced their second collaborative album of 2024: a score for Threshold, a documentary about Olympic cross-country skier Jessie Diggins, directed by Lars and Torsten Brinkema. The album drops November 20, and they've already teased three tracks - "Cold Open," "Sick and Tired," and "Gallivare 10km" - for your listening pleasure (or ambient contemplation).

The duo's first album, Tragic Magic, came out in January and was supported by a joint tour. Lattimore explained the creative process in a press release, noting that while Tragic Magic had constraints on instruments - historic, delicate, and mysterious ones - Threshold had no such limits. "The sky was the limit with instrumentation," she said, "but our music existed within the framework of Jessie's life and the vision of the directors." She described juggling both projects as "challenging, mind-expanding, and satisfying."

Lattimore also highlighted the emotional arc of Diggins's story: "Many triumphs, thrilling races and wins, but also quite low points that feel very human and call for musical tenderness." Because nothing says "athletic struggle" like ethereal ambient pads and shimmering harp. It was, she added, a pleasure to work with Julianna, Lars, and Tor to find the right melodies to enhance this great doc about someone so admired. We're sure the film will be just as moving as the music - or at least as moving as a documentary about cross-country skiing can be.
